Planning Process: Apartment Hunting Part I

Planning Process: Apartment Hunting Part I
We have 50 days left before we head off to South Africa for some much needed fun in the African sun. We will be hanging out with some other repatriates whom we have started to build a village with. After our brief stay in South Africa, it’s on to Ghana to start this new chapter of our lives. In the meantime, we have continued our preparation for the move. About two weeks ago we had a yard sale and we were able to sell many of the smaller household items we had not been able to sell via the online platform   www. offerupnow .com . After such a successful yard sale, we made additional profit to add to our saving. Honestly we are currently living like squatters in our own home but we have everything we need. The sacrifice is so real right now. But the reward will be even greater.  One of the biggest tasks we have had thus far is researching for a place to live once we touch down in Ghana. The one question inquiring minds have is, "have you all secured living arrangements in

We Need More Support and Less Judgement In The Black Community!

We Need More Support and Less Judgement In The Black Community!

Can you believe we only have 63 days left until our family repatriates to Africa? As the time draws near, we have experienced everything from anxiousness to pure excitement in our household. All of the emotions and the concerns associated with a move like this can be a little taxing. What makes things more difficult is when you lack a proper support system to help you process all of the thoughts running through your head. Unfortunately we haven't been blessed with the familial support that one would desire and or need when making such a life changing decision. You may have read our previous blog "Build Your Village Before You Move"  that discussed the necessity of building a support system prior to your move.  If you have not read it yet, we would suggest taking a look at it. For the Parks family, our support system has come in the form of wonderful people we are meeting along the way. We are very fortunate to have great people in our lives whom have eithe

Where Do We Go From Here?

Where Do We Go From Here?

Me : "America, I'm going to need some space." America : "Why? What's wrong?" Me : "Well, this relationship is getting a bit abusive. I mean, it's always been abusive. You lie to me, you're sneaky, you're always telling me what I can and can't do, you're overbearing, you do not respect me or my feelings, you do not listen, and you even take all my money and spend it on other things besides me." America : "I can change though. I am willing too if you just stay." Me : "No, I think we need to end this, so I'm leaving." "If you haven't had this conversation yet maybe you're still in denial about your relationship with America."  Seriously, we are now two days removed from what many Americans say was the worst day ever in American politics. Due to the complete emotional shock and in some cases extreme fear of where our new "POTUS" will lead the country dur

Africa Gets No Love!

Africa Gets No Love!

Victoria Falls, Zambia As we prepare to make our journey abroad we are meeting so many wonderful people.  In the many conversations had with African Americans, there have been amazing perspectives regarding the "why" behind our repatriation to Africa. We didn't realize we would be faced with the harsh reality that so many of us would question why an African American family would want to move to Africa of all places. In their minds, there is nothing to be gained by making such a move. We are in love with Africa and all that it has to offer, both as a place of residence or just as a vacation destination. Thus, in many of these conversations, we have found ourselves almost having to defend the African continent. Why is this? For some reason Africa gets no love from some of us in the black community.  Lake Malawi  When it comes the lack of interest in travel to the continent, the excuses are endless. Some say its too expensive and Europe or Asia are much more affor
